Well anyway, thanks for all your help. I'll keep playing around with it and see if I can figure it out. If I do, I'll post here again just for the records.

Hmm... when using an asf container and asf encapsulation, it worked, but when you drag the marker around to move to a different part of the movie, it would invert the colors and go all blocky for just a sec - not that the video itself was corrupted, it just messed up a little bit right when you drag...

Thanks joseph5! I've been looking, and it seems that while you use an asf container and h264 for video, there are various transcoding options for the audio. Is there any that anyone would recommend as best for this container? I ended up just playing with VLC for awhile until I got it to work, but th...

Oops. I read the default codec in the streaming menu instead of the one I actually used. I ctrl-i'd and it's with mpgv and a52 audio, but the bitrates are correct and the container is too. Sorry. I realize everyone wants the perfect video format, but I'm just trying to find anything that's better th...

How might I shrink mpg video files to save space?

I have a rather large video collection and it takes up a TON of space. All the files are MPG and were transcoded as either MPEG TS or MPEG PS using the mp4v codec for video at 1024 kb/s and mpega for audio at 192 kb/s. I would like to save these video files as some other type of video file so that t...

I just tried the subtitles overlay option like you said. I tried it for both MPEG TS and MPEG PS, because the transcoding options don't matter that much to me. (The wikihelp page it said that MPEG TS would be my best bet for subtitles, so that's what I tried first. I really don't care too much how I...

By the way, the subtitles are all in English; this isn't the disappearing foreign language subtitles issue. I mentioned it's a foreign film because it's in German so streaming it would be rather pointless to me unless I have a translation.

Streaming video with subtitles

I'm trying to save a foreign film on DVD to an mpeg. I'm streaming it as MPEG TS, title 1, subtitle track 0 (it has several tracks including a commentary track). I CANNOT get the subtitles to save with it! I've played around with various settings, but nothing works. Any suggestions?

Saved video files will not play with other programs

I followed DJ's specific directions here: http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=24458 ... to save a movie file as an MPEG from a DVD. It works wonderfully when I open it with VLC player, but when I try to open it with other programs like iTunes and Windows Media Player, it doesn't play properly ...

Saving audio portion from DVD - how?

I would like to save a portion of the audio from a DVD in an mp3 format. I don't know how, could somebody tell me? I don't know what settings to use in the streaming section, and I also don't know how to specify what portion of the audio I want (I don't want to save the audio from the whole DVD, jus...
