That worked for me, probably. But I'm not sure because I don't have this issue recently.
IIRC, this issue happened about the end of last month on my own custom builds (always updating to the latest git repository).

Does your issue happen only on OS X 10.8? What type of subtitles? SubRip(srt)? SSA/ASS? Can you provide the logs? I don't know, I didn't use VLC back then. I'm on Mountain Lion DP4, and I am unable to change subtitle font via the preferences dialog, is anyone having the same problem or is it just me?

Any workaround?

Btw, I'm using a nightly build of VLC 2.1, 2.0.1 had the same problem on mountain lion...
