Thanks! I tried the equaliser slection and my volume was on 100% anyway. I lowered this to 84% but the problem remains.

I have created a wav file that plays perfectly acceptably in other players but mysteriously (and horribly) in VLC the pitch rises and falls over 5-10 second periods. I have never encountered such a problem before in other software. I have seen a few posts mentioning similar problems but no solutions...
