Ok. Thanks. It does seem like there is a real issue with VLC/Alsa, hopefully fixed someday. Pulse isn't a practical solution for SPDIF on my system.

It doesn't work that way on my system. AFAIK Pulse is essentially a Server/Mixer that sits on top of Alsa anyway. Once you are doing SPDIF passthrough, Pulse is irrelevant. How it appears In VLC.
