Guys: Great responses, it got me to go back and see if the author of FAAD would respond ... and he did. What he asked was if the command line FAAD2 tool would decode the audio stream from the subject movie. I tried it, it did. He points back to the way that VLC decodes the audio, I quote here: "...

Might it also be the decoder? As I say, it plays in windows media ... the high res version on that page has hiccuping audio in quicktime, but the low res (that also fails in VLC) plays fine in quicktime ... could the decoder be being a bit too strict?

Another no sound in 2.0.1 (though it hasn't been 2.0.1 specific) For the last few releases, I've had issues with audio on mp4 files: no audio playback. Files plays on Windows Media Player. I think it started around 1.10, through 1.11, just installed 2.0.1, same thing. Verbosity 2 log says: faad warn...
