The mingw-w64 prebuilt contrib packages doesn't work with mingw-w64 2.0.1-1 (stable) as some of the libraries use an "___ms" prefix for msvc functions which is not used by mingw-w64 2. This results in config.log messages such as /home/user/vlc/contrib/i686-w64-mingw32/lib/libdvdnav.a(dvdna...

The benefit over a file server is that it would allow seeking together with transcoding. It would therefore be worthwhile to consider this suggestion.
