VLC and Mediaservers

I love the VLC player (both win and android) but I'm sad it doesn't seem to work well with my favourite mediaserver: MediaMonkey. I'm strictly talking about audio now. When I ask for 'albums' VLC shows me a list of albums, but they are all 'empty'. However, when I search via 'composer', like I do fo...

Re: Message "this conversion will take time"

By the way: The message I mentioned is clearly nonsensical, but it could indicate a deeper problem with the 'casting' technique. Obviously, VLC should not decide by itself whether or not the signal is suiteable for ChromeCast; such an indication should come from the mediaserver (which may or may not...

Re: Message "this conversion will take time"

Hi JEFromCanada, 1. I don't think VLC is actually doing any converting; or if it does it would be rather stupid: what would VLC do with the converted signal? The ChromeCast seeks the file on the mediaserver (Plex in my case), not from VLC on my phone. So this can't work. 2. Lots of confusion about t...

Re: Chromecast and hi-res audio problems

I think I know what my prblem was: the flac files surreptitiously contained 5 audio-channels. This was apparently too much fro the ChromeCast Audio to handle. Since I converted (or rather: transcoded) them to stereo they play quite well (in 96/24 format).

Re: Message "this conversion will take time"

yes, @Spike1, I get that; but it's not an answer to my question. I already said that VLC can play the file without problem. It's when trying to 'cast' the file that I get the message, which, I'm by now convinced, is just plain wrong.

Re: Message "this conversion will take time"

Sorry but your answer is not really clear to me. Why would VLC (on my phone) have anything to do with re-encoding when the file is streamed directly from the mediaserver to the Chromecast?

Message "this conversion will take time"

VLC for Android sometimes shows me the above message which I can't explain, given the circumstances; no doubt because I do not really know how things work :-) My setup is as follows. On a (windows10) computer I run a Mediaserver (Plex). I have a TV with a Chromecast dongle (model I). I use VLC on my...

Re: Yet another authentication problem - I think

There's also a filemanager app on the phone. It asked for credentials (long ago) and now accesses the Windows computer (Mediaserver) with no problem. When I set the option 'use external player' it brings up VLC which then plays the file! (Not a solution, though; to find the right file I really need ...

Yet another authentication problem - I think

I rely on the adagium that there are no stupid questions... My problem is this: my partner and I both have the exact same Android smartphone with the exact same version of VLC. I have no trouble accessing our LAN and and a PC containing music etc. But when I try my partners phone, the little wheel k...

Chromecast and hi-res audio problems

For years I've been using VLC for Android to cast music from my DNLA server to a Chromecast Audio without problems. Now I finally got round to buying some music in the form of 96/24 quality FLAC's. At first they didn't seem to play, but then I accidentally noticed that they do play, but start with a...

Unseekable stream - Android vs Windows

yes, I know this is an old problem and often answered, but some questions still keep bugging me. When watching video's from my in-house mediaserver on my Android phone and tablet (using for exemple VLC v. 3.1.7), I can often not 'fast-foward' or jump to somewhere in the movie. Extremely annoying as,...

Videolan settings for handling mime-types

Hi, this is probably a real newbee question: Under Windows XP, I set VL as the default handler for a number of filetypes - that works, no problem. But now I want to change that for some files, e.g. I want WMP to open .wma files, in particular when using my webbrowser (Firefox). Using VLC, I seem not...
