You're right, using DirectX fixed it

However, I lose Aero when using DirectX. Although that isn't such a big issue since I'm not normally using Windows whilst watching video, is there any other way?

Whilst playing video on other media players (e.g. Media Player Classic), I have found that certain settings in CCC improve the video quality significantly. In particular, I really like the Dynamic Range and Color Vibrance. However, VLC doesn't seem to be affected by the changes. Is there any way to ...
