Further to my earlier comment, I am seeing that this crash occurs consistently with playback of MKV files but never with AVI files.

I'm having the exact same issue, also with 64bit version of 2.1.5. I have uninstalled and re-installed, and re-booted, but the problem persists. Each and every time I close the program it generates this "stopped working" message. It's not a serious issue as I am able to play the video file...

Thanks, good to know I'm not alone. I seem to have fixed things now. I reviewed again the suggestions made by Lotesdeler and made changes to the settings as outlined in the following and the distortion has gone!

My problem with severely distorted audio has returned. I've gone through the steps suggested by Lotesdelere and can't find anything that addresses the issue. I can go through the complete re-installation process again that fixed it last time but I'd like to see if I can't get to the bottom of this. ...

Thanks for your reply. I ended up resolving the issue by uninstalling VLC altogether, including the preferences, and doing a fresh install. And that fixed it!
