0.8.6h on Win98

I updated my VLC player from 0.8.6f to 0.8.6h, and it seems Windows 98 compatibility was once again broken. (I am getting a wxWidgets fatal error). 0.8.6f worked fine.

Can those of you for whom it crashes give one or more specific .wmv files on the internet, so that we have something common to look at.

I am also using 0.8.5 on Windows 98 SE, so I can test.

Re: vlc.0.8.4a and above don't run on Win98 (unicows.dll)

Thanks for NOT making that clear - now I have to backstep (manually)
What are you talking about? If you don't have unicows.dll, install MSLU and you are all set.

It seems either C:\Windows, C:\Windows\System or C:\Windows\System32 will work. By default MSLU installs under C:\Windows\System, I think.

Hiss during audio playback

I have the following problem when playing audio files or CDs with VLC Media Player. Version 0.8.5, but it was the same with the previous ones. Windows 98 SE. When the audio output module is set to default or DirectX, I generally have a hissing noise in the background and the perceived quality of the...

Re: Not working at all

If I uninstall and install 0.8.4a again everything works. Have you dropped support for win9x?
We haven't dropped it intentionaly but we don't really bother to test anymore. I'll try to see if this can be fixed.
Thanks for fixing the issue for Windows 98 on the 0.8.5 final release! :)

About unicode on Windows 9x: you need to download MSLU from the microsoft web site and install it. However, this is currently a little broken in test3/test4 so don't expect it to work before the final we release (we are debugging this as i write this message). Hi, thanks for the reply - yes, I do h...

Hmm, I did not get that error on Windows 98 SE. Under what circumstances did you get the error?
