I created an interface from the base HTTP files to browse for movies by cover art. The internal VLC web server (ver. 1.1.12) won't render image files with spaces in the names even if URL encoded in the function.js.

So in some form this bug still exists.

I too have recently taken on this task. It's pretty easy to modify the style.css and the functions.js files to suit your needs. The only peculiarity I found was the VLC web server does not like files with spaces in the names. An image file encoded as 3-10%20to%20Yuma.jpg will throw a 404 but 3-10toY...
