  %appdata% is (of course) the environment variable which points to your appdata folder. And of course you wouldn't want to remove appdata folder! If you see vlcrc file you are in %appdata%\vlc Go Up one level and delete (or move elsewhere) the vlc folder. P.S. I don't see why you can't open the vlc...

Why don't you just put the subtitle file next to the video file and rename it to match the name of the video?
In this case the subtitle file will be opened automatically.

I'm not sure if you misunderstood me or just didn't read my post. The problem is not with shortcuts, I have already pointed them to favicon.ico, the problem is with the .exe file itself. The .exe file does not have any icon and since it is a compiled executable I don't really know how to add an ico...

 
Check/Change the icon in the shortcut Properties

Point it to ...\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe




If this doesn't work use (for the icon only) ...\VideoLAN\VLC\uninstall.exe

You can also use: ...\VideoLAN\VLC\http\favicon.ico
