thanks for the reply. i checked the .mkv in MKVMerge and the subtitles are not marked as forced.

were you referring to the preferences within VLC? when i type "none" in the 'Prefered subtitles language' box, it doesn't change anything.

i might be missing something...

which option do you select to shut them off by default? i just grabbed the latest version of VLC, and I can't seem to get subtitles for .mkv files to stay off by default. every time i play a file i have to turn them off manually.

it was never remembering it, but then i changed back to the default skin and it works now. strange.

edit: yup, doesn't seem to work when you aren't using the default skin. i tried a couple WMP11 skins. is this a known issue?

how to fit-to-screen by default?

hi, is there any way to have a video to fit-to-screen by default when opening? not fullscreen - i mean basically doing the same thing that double-clicking the top menu bar does. right now, the program opens the video at whatever it's resolution is, so a 1080p video always has a portion off the scree...
