Ok.... I think this has something to do with the switchable graphics problem I've not yet solved. Thanks! EDIT: I tried all the available plugins. Only GLX Video Output (XCB) gives a video output, and that too becomes choppy if I enlarge the window/play it in full screen. Any solution to that? Thank...

What do you mean by display freezes? Does the whole desktop freeze, just the VLC UI or just the video rendering area?
The whole display freezes - as in it hangs.

And I had thought about a Virtual Machine too, but the PCs here are ancient - 512MB RAM, ancient dual-core processors.
