You have to use HDMI cable. And use audio device of the display adapter.

I have a GBL cable. Is that a "real hdmi output"? ( I really don't know what it is, it's the 1st time I hear that). I tried 5.1 but the sound is still stereo. I mean I hear music also from the rear speakers, but it is NOT a 5.1... it's just the same sound of the front speaker. On the panel...

Hello, I am using the last version of VLC on a Dell xps 1640 machine running Win7 Ultimate edition (32 bit). I cannot send the 5.1 audio to the hdmi output (the dell is connected to an A/V amplifier.
