since your using linux and most assuredly the NAS does NFS the best solution for any type of file/media is NFS setup the NAS to export a NFS share and your desktop to auto mount the share it will look like a local filesystem and act like one as well using samba for anything you dont have to is a pain

been banging my head on the desk over building this for 3 weeks how can one edit libvlcjni.h when it doesnt exist till after you need it? i have yet to find it until after i try to build the jni interface with VLC_BUILD_DIR=../../../build VLC_CONTRIB=../../contrib make then it is to late to keep it ...
