Windows XP Pro ver. 5.1

I am an avid English subtitle user and was wondering: Sometimes I will go to open the subtitle I have downloaded and there is one already loaded. I'm not sure if it is because the show already had a subtitle embedded, or if VLC is able to selectively find and load a subtitle I have downloaded, which...

I currently have 2.0.3 and I'm periodically asked to download the latest version, but any time I try, just as the download finishes VLC crashes, and I get a 'can't connect to ftp server' error when I go to report it.
Do I need to uninstall and download from scratch?

Just installed this version (Win XP), and was just wondering... WHAT HAPPENED TO THE VIDEO SPEED ARROWS???
They weren't hurting anything and I used them like ALL THE TIME? !
Do I have to reinstall the previous version I just had or am I missing some fix here?

Tool called Mediainfo will reveal the facts. MKV subtitle can be created in such way that there isn't default subtitle track. OK, now I've got VLC 1.1.9 installed. It updated my fonts, and now I am able to select a font, but how do I get subtitles to work -when they are available and should be visible?
