I really can't believe the greatest Linux video player (I'd say Windows too) doesn't present the user which such a simple feature.

Is this behavior by design or just a long dragged hole in the player?

the 'Kaffeine' player can render subtitles outside of the video area. It'd be great if VLC could add this basic feature.
