I did and indeed it did help. I was sure I had tried that before without success, but possibly I didn't save the change correctly and/or exit and restart with GPU decoding activated. Or I'm making too many changes all at once and not getting a clear reading on what is causing what and what is/is not...

I could not figure out how to do that with MKVToolnix (at least not quickly), so I used a different utility that added a watermark - hopefully that does not matter.

Log below... Two more data points. I re-ripped the DVD with DVDFab to MKV and chose to burn the subtitles in to the movie and that worked, but of course the subtitles are always on with no way to turn them off as by design. And I also took the original MKV output container and remuxed it with MKVMer...

VLC Won't Play *.idx/*.sub Subtitles

I ripped a DVD to *.mkv with DVDFab and it created the subtitle *.idx and *.sub files. They display in MPC, but not in VLC. I snagged an *.srt file and it plays fine, but I would rather be able to use the subtitles ripped from the *.vob files if I can to save the effort of looking for a good clean *...
