Auto-detection is restricted to the formats that are very likely to be subtitles. And .txt isn't one of those formats. I'm afraid it is :( Here you can see an example: http://www.opensubtitles.org/pl/search/sublanguageid-all/subformat-txt , I see Hungarian, Hebrew, English, Romanian, Spanish,Turkis...
