How to output the debug message to a file?

Hi all, I am new to Linux. I want to output the debug message on the screen to a file. I tried this: vlc -vvv >a.txt But it doesn't work. When I check the a.txt file, it's empty. I tried this one: ls >a.txt , it works. Can anyone tell me how I can put the vlc debug message to a file? Thank you:)

Thank you for your answer. I think I may use kde to show the interface, so the v4l GUI isnot shown. But I tried the below command but it doesn't work:
vlc -vvv v4l:adev=/dev/dsp:audio=0
I input voice through microphone, but I cannot hear anything in my headphone.

It works OK from C to A, but failed from A to C.

when streaming, If the first frame is not keyframe, the first frame on the client will be seen as a green screen, and become normal after a few seconds. How can I avoid this happen. Can the client wait for the first keyframe and then display it? Dose it have an option to do this?
