Recomendation on watching cable TV on VLC

Postby JZA » 12 Mar 2012 10:06

but I have a cable bill that sells me cable TV and internet, I dont have a TV so the cablebox is just sitting there collecting dust. I want to know if there is any hardware solution that can interact with that box and I can interact with it using VLC through the wifi network.
The cable box looks something like this.
I have been thinking that maybe another box could do the trick, but might be pricy, also just getting a TV card could come through but this is a laptop and rather want to access it through Wifi.
Also use Linux so a software solution might not be compatible.

More so than VLC, it depends what kind of output(s) the box has, and what kind of input(s) your computer has.

The one you linked outputs through copy-protected analog and HDMI. And normally you won't find any corresponding inputs on the computer, though you could probably buy a PC video capture card.

In general, to watch TV on a computer, a TV tuner for PC is the best option. But depending on the country, the operator and the copy protection scheme, it might or might not be possible. Personally, I wired my computer to the cable with a DVB-C tuner USB stick. But I can only watch free-to-air channels.
