Borderless Window (not minimal view)

I'd love to have the ability to turn off the top border of the movie window. I'm used to this feature from bsplayer and mplayer (linux), and I'm really missing it now that I moved over to OS X.

I often watch movies while doing other things on my computer, and the less unnecessary space there is on the movie window, the more productive my desktop is.

Ps. Moving the window could then be done by clicking and holding inside the video window itself.

this is available in the developement version under linux. Just run vlc with vlc --no-video-deco . (developement version doesn't include the 0.8.2 version)

you already have the option in windows. preferences (with "advanced options") > video > "window decorations"

but: you can´t move or resize the window. so you have to specify x and y coordinates in the same preferences menu (coordinates affect upper left corner of the window)

See, that's why I'm staying with BSplayer.
I like that my mouse scroll-wheel controls the size of the bordeless screen with bsplayer. And by borderless I mean 0 pixels of nonsense. It's all under the right-mouse button.

Call me if VLC finally has those features and I'll switch

First, thanks for all the hard work which has gone into VLC -- it's my favorite media player.

I'm requesting completely borderless/frameless playback feature for the Windows version of VLC, similar to the way mpc-hc does it (when you press 1 while watching a video).

The window would also need to be draggable when the mouse button is held down. It would also be nice if the "normal" mode was re-instated when escape is pressed while the window is in focus.

I think this would give VLC a very modern look/capability without major code changes and without having to apply any skin or modifications.

You can already get borderless/frameless window.

--video-deco, --no-video-deco Window decorations (default enabled) VLC can avoid creating window caption, frames, etc... around the video, giving a "minimal" window. (default enabled)

(but there isn't easy way to switch between modes)

I'm aware of the option, but...sorry, that still does leave a lot to be desired (no ability to move window, no resizing ability besides setting initial command line --video-x=# --video-y=#).

So I suppose my request is the ability to switch between modes, resizing ability, and ability to move the window. I know that may be asking a lot, but I still think it'd be a really nice feature. Try mpc-hc and press 1 if you'd like to feel the experience.

I really would like to create something like BSPlayer offers you: A playback window with no boarders which can be resized by draging the edges (and/or pressing pre-defined buttons) and can be positioned anywhere by click-draging the window itself, it should also be seperated from the controls (thanx to the "embbed player"option already possible) and be displayed above all windows all the time while controls is not (but again with the playback window on top when it is clicked).
Is that even possible some how?

this feature is the last reason I stick to BSPlayer and WinAMP instead of only using VLC.

reason is very simple: if you got a resizable, movable playback window which can stay on top (you dont need control menues then) you can place it anywhere. Browse and watch a movie, work while watching a series... every empty/unused space can be filled with the vid...

My Mac setup goes like this:

VLC > Preferences > Show All > Video:
- Embedded video - off
- Always on top - on
(scroll down)
- Window decorations - off
> Save setting, restart VLC

VLC > Preferences > Interface (in Basic Settings)
- Resize interface to the native video size - off
> Save setting, restart VLC

Start a video, and disable the playlist (cmd+shift+P)

Media Player Classic lets users switch to borlderless mode and the video can be dragged around by clicking on the video itself.

This is extremely useful because it lets you avoid wasting valuable screen real-estate with the frame, so you can tuck the video into the corner of the screen and watch it while continuing to work on other things (not everybody has a 100" monitor).

Unfortunately, MPC’s speed-adjustment settings leave much to be desired because unlike VLC, you cannot increase the speed to watch (and get through) videos faster with proper audio and CPU usage (and certainly not with the fine-grained intervals as low as 10% that VLC does).

I hope that VLC will eventually implement a borderless mode for Windows (and create an option to remove the taskbar button). That way, users can finally view videos unobtrusively while working.

I thought it is only with the Linux version. I tested it in Windows and it did not work (not that it matters because like you said, even if it did work, it would be useless, especially since the window keeps resizing when playing a list of videos of different sizes).

It does work on Windows, and you can force the size, of course. (Just tested).

I could only get the borderless mode to work by turning off the option to have the video embedded in the interface. That’s no good because it then creates two windows and two taskbar buttons (we want the option to have NONE, not double).

I did turn off the resize interface option though which makes it much easier to view multiple videos of different dimensions without having to resize the window after every video.

Scratch that; turning the option off makes it so that every time you start a video, the window is the same small size it was last time, which causes the video to show as a postage-stamp and require manually adjusting the window. Even pressing Z to zoom doesn’t help; only manually dragging the window sizing-handles. This defeats the purpose of turning the option off to avoid having to resize.

There needs to be a way to let it resize on opening VLC, but not resize when starting a new item in the playlist that has different dimensions.
