.asx/.wma won't launch..

Postby exchangeguy » 11 Feb 2012 14:07

I'm streaming music off of Frontier Silicon Wi-Fi Radio. Default browser is IE 9. VLC is the default player for all media file extensions. When i launch a station that streams .MP3, IE prompts me what to do; i choose "open"; VLC launches and plays the station no problem. When i select a .WMA stream (actually says it's ".asx" when it starts to download; not sure if that's relevant) i also choose "open" and VLC launches, but the station doesn't play. That is, VLC just opens as if i had clicked on the app from the start menu. If i then click the play button in VLC, it just goes to the "open media" screen, like it's asking me where the file/stream is i want to open.

Has anyone seen this before? Not sure why VLC would handle one media type differently than another, at least when it comes to simply playing the media.

Thanks in advance!

It is the IE that pastes the files/URLs to VLC. If VLC playlist is empty with that .asx, then IE doesn't most likely pass the file/URL correctly as command-line parameter.

Thanks for the feedback, but i don't think this is an IE issue (although still not sure it's a VLC issue either.) I took your advice and tried launching the .WMA stream using Chrome, then Opera, then FireFox (same result.) I also tried it using the same browsers on a friends computer and it made no difference

Any other thoughts, ideas, or suggestions out there?

Thanks again!

If you copy the URL of that ASX file, and open it via Media -> Open network, does it work correctly?

Did you create the file associations manually or did you use VLC installer for that?

i created the file associations initially using VLC. later i tried it with Windows, but Windows already knew VLC was the app to use (just for giggles i changed it to something else and then changed it back again using the Windows file association, but that didn't help.)

the url doesn't end in ".asx" like you were downloading some other type of file. but, if i copy and paste the URL into a different browser window and press enter, it does prompt me to download or open the .asx file. so, i put that same url into Media --> Open network, but nothing happened. It just take me back to the main VLC window. If i try clicking the play button after that, it just prompts me to select a file i want to play. strange.

Could you share that URL to us?

I think you need an account on Frontier Silicon Wifi-Radio to access the URL. If you do have one, just choose any WMA stream.

I did finally figure out a work-around, although not terribly thrilled with it since it involves using a different player. I reassociated the following file types with Windows Media Player..

.asf
.asx
.midi
.wax
.wm
.wmd
.wms
.wmv
.wmx
.wmz
.wpl
.wvx

I don't think i needed to associate all of them with WMP, but i was too lazy to go back and start changing them one by one to see which ones were necessary. The frustrating part is that i know VLC is capable of playing all those file types. I just can't figure out why VLC can't handle them directly from the wifi radio web site but WMP can. Oy!
