always choppy playback

Postby greyhood » 16 Jan 2012 11:46

hi friends

please be kind with me i am far from an advanced user

anytime i try to play 720p it will be choppy at some point (too often that im almost ready to give up on vlc)

funny thing is that playback in windows media player 12 is flawless

the media info:
H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part10) (avc1)
A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52 )

here are my (yes my computer is outdated) specs:
VLC 1.1.9
Win XP pro sp3
2GB DDR2 Ram
Intel core 2 duo T7300

another thing i notice (hate) is that when i go frame by frame (pressing "E") is that it will work for about 2 frames then i will get a pixelated mess of green barf like this:

Image

this is cool but im not playing the original zelda for nes so i'd prefer not to have green squares on my video...

anyway, i've read all the other posts for a good hour and nothing seems to work.

here's what i've tried:

'Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding' change it to 'All' > did nothing
Use GPU acceleration > did nothing
uninstall, and reinstall > did nothing
punching my cat > did nothing

in summary

my cpu usage goes to about 65% when i try playing 720p videos.
i have the k-lite codec pack installed. (if i delete this then there's trouble for any player on my computer)

720p mkv's play flawless in windows media player 12 but not in vlc.... why does this haunt my dreams?

thanks guys/girls (although it's 99.9999% going to be a guy)

:P

Is it ponctual macroblocking always at the same time for the same file and after some time it gets back to normal? Or from some point your file is unwatchable?
If it's the first one, then you'll have to upgrade your vlc as this bug has already been corrected.
For the second case :
Can you open tools->messages set verbosity to two, start playback and then paste the logs here.

VLC cannot use codec packs (VLC can't use any DirectShow or VfW decoders, splitters etc.), so k-lite doesn't matter.

The latest version is 1.1.11.

If updating to that doesn't help try a nightly build:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/

^ "trunk" builds are the latest, "branch" are for the upcoming 1.2.0 release.

And as TypX said, post messages if it still happens.

yes it is choppy at certain parts but not always the exact same parts. i noticed if i were to hit pause during playback, when i resumed play it would be choppy during parts because i hit pause...

so if i hit pause and it chops ive got in the habbit of closing vlc and opening the video again and scrolling back to where i was (kind of ruins the mood) which sometimes fixes the choppiness throughout.

sorry i meant 1.1.11 yes thats what i have

OK - well give a nightly build a try.

just did, bad. it kept freezing and crashing.

now its easy for me to just give up and say "well, its time for a new computer"

BUT...

720s play in wmp so i have no idea whats going on. and why vlc always craps out on me...

If you can get VLC to crash, then you can backtrace the crash with GDB and figure out what part is crashing.

OK, perhaps a "branch" nightly build would be better (assuming you were using the "trunk" ones).

As VLC_help said, you could debug it and see what was crashing it too.

vlc player has always been choppy for me and sometimes even xvid video goes choppy for a few seconds after i hit pause...

i think im just going to use windows media player for 720p files

unfortunately vlc player and my computer do not work well enough together to work

unless there is something in the settings i can change, but again i think the problem isnt vlc, but its my slow computer.

Did you try VLC 2.0?
Did you try GPU decoding?

I don't think it's your machine as I'm having a similar issue that bugs me. I'm running a core i7 3Ghz and have a choppy playback when I try
to run a MPEG-4 video in full-screen on my HDTV through HDMI. The weird thing is that it works fine when the window is maximized but when
I double-click to get it to full-screen it gets choppy a second after. No problems with Windows Media Player though so I might give up on VLC as well...
I tried changing GPU acceleration, video outputs and even tried the latest build of VLC 2.1.0 to no avail. If anybody has the slightest idea why this happens
I'd be happy to test and assist to solve it.

Secondary display fullscreen causes problems. We have no clue why that happens, but swapping devices or setting the secondary as only output can be used to avoid this.

That works fine when I disable the primary device. The funny part is that my roommate's computer is connected to the same receiver -> HDTV and his VLC plays just fine. I even swapped his cable
with mine to test it out and still no go. The only difference is that he has Nvidia GTX550 as opposed to my GTX460.

P.S I just tested BSplayer and it works fine.
