False color when using second monitor, unwatchable

Postby rbiz » 05 Nov 2011 15:45

Fixed: Using MplayerX instead of VLC. VLC sucks for me.

I have exactly the same issue. OSX 10.7.2. Problem initially when using 1.1.12, but I've tried going back to 11 and 10 (and reset settings along the way) and still have the same problem.

Mine works fine on my MBP. When I try and output to my LG TV (via HDMI) I get the same problem. The screen works fine, but when I try and play VLC video it looks dark. I tried opening the same video in Quicktime on the external screen, and it works fine.

It's difficult to work out what has changed so this error has happened. I've not done this for a week or so, and can only presume in the meantime there has been a Mac/VLC update that caused the problem.

I'm also happy to help diagnose the bug by submitting any information that is useful.

Anyone?

Have you tried VLC 1.2? We rewrote the video output there.

Thanks for the reply. I'm really struggling to find a 1.2 Mac download - please could you put up a link?

Very poor form to delete my reply. I simply said VLC 1.12 is unusable for me, and I have opted to use a different Media Player for OSX which doesn't have these problems. I would welcome a response (forum or otherwise) regarding my problem. I will install the nightly and see if I have the same problem.

Just to let the developer know - 1.12 did fix my original problem (darkened secondary display), but it is also unusable for me too, so I'm a bit stuck.

I realise the developer is too busy to look at everything, but any chance you could try and reproduce this problem and issue a quick fix for 1.1.12?

I have tried using the nightly build (1.2) and I find that the false/dark colour on the second display is no longer an issue. However, I still have stuttery video playback, and another issue - the program crashes after finishing a video in full screen.
Knowing that there are other video players out there, this unstable release isn't an acceptable solution so I will continue to use another player.

Same system and computer, same issue, and also it seems so far that using the nightly build is helping.
But, actually, not sure this is VLC's fault (MacOS Lion?) as I have partially the same issue with windows of the finder when I move them from one screen to another...

… the nightly build is helping, but is working poorly.

I have the same problem. I'm also on a Macbook Pro, OS X 10.7.2, VLC 1.1.12. Second monitor is an ACER that I've watched videos on via VLC for years. This started happening in the last week or so.

Yeah, same thing here, however it seems as if it's becoming worse.

Setup: MBP(Spring09) running OSX 10.7.2, VLC 1.1.12.

This began or became noticeable when playing a DVD rented from redbox just after the 27th of November. All media works fine through iTunes, iDVD. Problem is isolated to my Vizio True LED screen that I use for movies connected via HMDI output cable from the MBP. I noticed this again last night when watching another owned DVD, Army of Darkness, which, granted an old film, was unwatchable. This afternoon I had time to validate all of my concerns while trying yet another DVD, Star Trek(2009). The picture was actually worse and so grainy/green, that it is now completely unwatchable on the big screen. Tried all four HDMI ports to ensure it wasn't a cable or port issue, reset all settings on VLC, Vizio screen and verified that VLC works just peachy on my MBP's screen.
So that is all I have at the moment. If I figure anything else out, I'll post it.
Haven't tried to uninstall and re-install VLC. Might give it a whirl.
cheers,

keefer

Same issue here. MBA 2011 refresh running OSX 10.7.2; VLC 1.1.12; NEC MultiSync E-231W via DisplayPort. I get the darkened video on both my primary (MBA) monitor and my secondary (NEC) monitor as long as the latter is connected. Tested with QuickTime and video looks fine. Nightly build is not resolving the issue for me and creating other problems. Hoping for a fix on 1.1.12 very soon!
