xubuntu problems with subtitles

Hello
I the xubuntu o.so and I love vlc.
Now recently I had to reinstall my operating system and I also reloaded vlc using the software centre.
Today I downloaded a tv programme and when I played it subtitles appeared now as usual I went to disable it but that option was not available.
Does anyone have an idea of why this is so.
I would be grateful for any aid .
