How to save place markers?

VLC is my player of choice, and I have no intention of straying. But I was wondering how to save place markers.

With Quicktime or DVD Player (Mac), you can save your place in a video. The next time you open a file, it will open to the last time you opened the player. How can you do this with VLC? Frankly, I'm not sure this function exists, but it seems like a natural for VLC? Or is there a plug-in that will allow one to save places in file for future viewing?
