All files associating with VLC

Hello, I updated my VLC player a while ago and encountered an unusual problem. When I updated, it associated ALL files with VLC. More specifically, it associated all shortcuts with VLC, and some other file types as well... Any shortcuts that I had on my start bar, or under start/all programs are associated with VLC, and try to open with VLC. Any games, internet explorer, everything. Now, start/my computer, and start/control panel, etc, those still work, and SOME files that the shortcuts associate with VLC will work if i go to c/program files (x86)/etc. while others still associate with VLC.

I have uninstalled VLC completely, and re-installed. When I re-install I un-check file types to associate with VLC. Newer versions of VLC have since come out, and that hasn't helped. When I un-install VLC everything goes back to normal, but I like vlc because I have files that only it will play. It is very frustrating having to re-install, and then un-install every time I want to watch a movie or something. Has anyone heard of this problem?

If it helps, I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

You probably did not download the official VLC from the correct website. We cannot help you then.

I downloaded it from VLC's main website. http://sourceforge.net/projects/vlc/fil ... works-us-2 I have un-installed and re-installed several times

The official VLC cannot fix an earlier unofficial installation.

i'm not trying to fix an earlier unofficial install. I recently redid my partition, and since then at the very least have ONLY installed from VLC's main website. I don't know where you're getting the idea that I had an unofficial install from, but that is not the case.

it has nothing to do with installation..by some mistake you have given open shortcut with VLC. as we change application for music or photos for eg rightclick to some mp3 file>properties>open with and select winamp instead of wmp. when this happs to some shortcut windows starts behaving as if tht shortcut tries to open with tht software..in your case its VLC. i also faced same prob. i tried aloat and finally formatted my c drive.. coz i dont know how to change registry for this issue. i dont know why this tool place. because of some virus or something else..In my case my friend did mistake which i explained above and from then every shortcut started opening with real player. so if any one know how to change this registry, let us know. but definatly it has nothing to do with installation
