VLC Crashes In All Video Formats

Ive used VLC on this cpu for almost 3 years now and never had this problem. Every format of video i watch on VLC especially .mkv files cause VLC to crash leading to my OS lagging out for the next 10min. Ive reset the preferences and caches files, tried the movies with no sound/with video and no video/with sound. Ive changed deinterlacing from off to automatic to on and none of it matters. Post processing from 0-6 doesnt change anything and windowed mode and fullscreen and it still crashes. My bug report doesn't pick up anything. The track sycronization will delay the video by 300ms once in awhile when it crashes but it never recovers. as i've said above. "Ive reset the preferences and caches files, tried the movies with no sound/with video and no video/with sound. Ive changed deinterlacing from off to automatic to on and none of it matters. Post processing from 0-6 doesnt change anything and windowed mode and fullscreen and it still crashes. My bug report doesn't pick up anything. The track sycronization will delay the video by 300ms once in awhile when it crashes but it never recovers. Here is DxDiag file of my system build and spec. all my drivers are up to date and im running catalyst version 2011.0126.1749.31909" my drivers are up to date and also tried previous drivers and VLC versions that worked well together. any other thoughts?

ok. Try to downgrade VLC to 1.1.5.
Try to change video output to DirectX or Opengl

I have an interesting one, too. I have the exact same problem, but it seems to be version specific. 1.1.3 (I think) 1.1.5, and 1.1.7 all crash immediately upon loading on one particular (old) computer. The window resizes to accommodate the picture, then the program crashes. On a whim, I tried 0.9.8, which I had laying around still on my file server, and to my surprise, it worked. Apparently, something has been introduced in the later versions which crashes the video driver on this machine. What is it likely to be, and can it be disabled?

The system in question is a still surprisingly usable Inspiron 3700 laptop with a Celeron 433 and an ATI Rage Mobility-M1 AGP graphics chipset. Windows XP SP3, DX9c. I would like to have the latest fixes and compatibility updates, so please tell me what to try disabling to make the newer version work. I have already tried changing the output to DX, OGL, and several other things. I know this machine should support 686 routines, and am at a loss as to what might be crashing it.

yes ive been trying it and it doesnt crash any more but the video doesnt load fast enough and has to buffer randomly and freqently. It might mess up at one point in the movie and if i close the program and play it agian it probably wont mess up in the same spot again. But once it does mess up it has to buffer every 2-3secs and then plays normal for around 1 sec and is somtimes pixelated when it does so.
