VLC worked great for about 18 months then suddenly has probs

Postby vlc_fan_ » 17 Jan 2011 21:34

Hi, I'm a long time fan of VLC, installed it quickly and easily almost 2 yrs ago. Everything was wonderful until suddenly a couple of months ago the playback (of DVDs) began to sound bad. Sound breaking up, even the picture would jitter a little bit. It's happening on both regular movie disks and any home-recorded disks I make on a DVR. The problem seems to be getting worse, now we have dragging, speed slowing down to where you can hear the distortion in voices, music, whatnot.

My older brother, an expert, tried to help, did a lot of tinkering and resetting but said "It ignores everything I type in!" So, I'm at a loss. I would really hate to give up my favorite media player, but this is very frustrating and disappointing. I happen to enjoy watching DVDs at my desk. I miss that feature now!! I can't tell whether the trouble is my dvd computer drive or something else. Brother found some buffering troubles, my VLC is losing a lot of data. And even he is stumped for a way to fix it.

So, does anyone have any suggestions or advice? I'm desperate!!

It sounds more like your hardware is dying slowly. There's not much we can do.

Do you have any means to check CPU temperatures on your PC?

If so, please do.
If not, perhaps open the cover and check to see if the heatsink on the CPU is clogged with dirt.

Also, have you checked your memory?
If not, download and try with memtest86+. Version 4.1 is current:

Good luck!
