In playlist the duration of a piece of music (or a video) is displayed only if it was accessed already. A big advantage of Winamp for instance is, that is scans and displays all durations in advance, giving an impression of the total playing time or enabeling to identify pieces with unusual duration at once.
I'am just switching from many different players for different media to VLC only. But sometimes I miss some features
