I will start here.

Postby fblevins1 » 26 Dec 2010 14:54

I moderate/admin Forums that indirectly promote the use of VLC player and through that process I occasionally come across either bad sites or bad processes that use the VLC name to promote spy/malware and have tried in the past to contact VidoLan to let them know what was happening. Now I see there is a Forums, but I really could not find a specific board that I can use to report these sites or other bad practices that use VLC to their advantage.

Where can this be reported?

Thank you very much.

VLC is a great player and want to keep it great.

The biggest issue is that there isn't much we can do about it.

Well the good news is that one of the most dangerous spoof VLC sites I know of is gone. I tried to locate it and it is no longer available, so it would appear that it has been taken down.

So the latest problem is newest version of uTorrent. It has an application section and VLC player is listed there for download, and it does install VLC player on your computer...fine, however it also installs a spoof program simply called VLC that ask for permission to monitor torrent incoming connections and is installed by bittorrent inc. Which I declined to approve, and went to my windows installer where I found VLC player and also the spoof program called VLC, I uninstalled them both and then came here to get the proper and latest version.

Maybe there is nothing that can be done about it, but perhaps a section that is kept current where members can go to get warnings. But then again, if they are members of this site Forums then they are already at the right place. :D

VLC player has and will always be the recommended fix for all of the members that come to the Forums that I mod/admin asking for help with their media playing problems. Codecs are fine...VLC is great.

I thought the uTorrent was the normal one.
I'll investigate.

I dove a little deeper into this utorrent addon and it looks like this might be a harmless addon that adds a user interface called VLC that allows the user to play any file in their client directly from the file listing in utorrent. It has the VLC look to it on the top with two tabs that list videos and music on the client.

The problem with this idea is that only works if you make VLC player your default player. If you choose not to allow it to be the default player then it will open up with whichever player is default...I. E....Windows Media player. It is also useful to point out that uTorrent already had the file play function in it's client. This is simply a cute little graphical interface.

Since it is designed to operate with VLC and assuming that the user gave permission to allow VLC to be the default player it does have the added benefit of solving many traditional codec playback problems.

This could be a good thing.

VLC can't do much about it, I'm guessing. They can't moniter every forum on the internet to make them behave. The best way to fix the problem is probably to report it via email to VLC and hope they can do something about it. The other opinion would be boards like this to keep track of those sites in a sticky. Just my two cents.

http://www.downlxxxxayer.org/ I was wrong, that spoof site is still around. You might not be able to do anything about it, but maybe you can warn your members or maybe have them all report them to site advisor, since advisor falsely reports them as not having a problem...WOT does report them as malicious.
