Can I convert vlc avi to uncompressed avi?

Postby light-vessel » 12 Dec 2010 02:20

I have some video from a camera that was captured by vlc player. It's in an avi format, some sort of dv codec that VirtualDub claims is a Video For WIndows thing so it's incompatible. The only software that can play this video is vlc. I want to save it as an uncompressed avi. I don't want to lose even a single pixel of what is in this video. I want to be able to process it with other programs such as Jasc Animation Shop and VirtualDub before carrying out any sort of compression.

The choices in convert/save are limited and all of them have hideous levels of compression. The only way I have found is to go frame-by-frame through the video and save each image as png files. This makes vlc player crash after every few frames saved and I have about 5 minutes of video.

Can vlc convert/save videos as uncompressed avi? This is not the first time I have wanted to do this and I have never found an answer.

If you know the correct chroma, then you can probably transcode to raw video. But I guess you need to use the CLI.

Thanks. Nice short answer - it almost makes it look simple! But...

Shall I take it that you mean a command line interface of VLC? I'm not sure what you mean by the correct chroma. I used a program called gspot to give information about the video and I found out it uses a codec simply called dv and I don't have it installed. I know that I have a codec called dv installed, but probably not the right one. Maybe that is one of the problems I have.

I shall investigate what was in your answer, but if anyone can explain it to me in just a little more detail, I would be very appreciative.

CLI is command line interface. Chroma is the color coding scheme of the raw video, e.g. I4:2:0, YUY2, RGB 24-bits...

Can I convert a video to an uncompressed AVI?

Postby Lumberjack » 20 Apr 2020 14:47

Hello :)

I'm French and new on these forums.

I have more or less the same goal than the author of this thread. I have a video in a strange format that VLC can read and convert of course. The only issue I have is that I can't have a lossless quality.

It's a bit of a pity, because VLC can literally decode and convert everything, but the fact that we can't easily convert a video in a lossless format is a big limitation for me. For the audio stream, there is no problem, we can choose the FLAC or the WAV format. But for the video stream, I don't know how to do :(

Is there a solution ?

Thanks for your help !

Sériously, we need this !

VLC is an extraordinary software, but the fact that we can't convert a video file to an uncompressed AVI is unforgivable :? It's the basis ! The best would be to be able to choose other codecs installed on the computer, like an alternative choice !

The problem is that all the other lossy choices have catastrophic results, not matter which bitrate we choose...

Thanks for your help please !

That's been supported for many years.

No, I have not tried; I just know that it's supported. Please refer to the streaming documentation.

Thanks ! But I didn't find something about uncompressed video streams :?

https://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation:Streaming_HowTo_New/

It would be better if this basic function would be implemented in the interface of VLC...

VLC can do everything, except which is simple ! :P
