video stutters when playing high quality videos

Postby razaac » 20 Nov 2010 11:21

I have VLC version 1.1.4 and it plays most videos fine. However, if I try to play high quality videos, such as .mkv files ripped from blu ray discs, the video stutters a lot so that the movie is nearly unwatchable.
I have tried increasing the cache in the Input/codecs preferences setting and achieved no effect.
I have also changed the audio output to Win32 Waveout, and that didn't help either

Can someone help me out please?
Thanks in advance!

If you have new display adapter, you could try to enable GPU decoding

If you're watching 1080p .mkv's, it's likely a lack of processing power or memory. I've had the same problem on 3 laptops (all dualcore, 2.66GHz and up w/ 2GB RAM) my PC plays them fine though (i7-950 w/ 12GB DDR3)

The best way to find out is to open Task Manager and monitor your CPU and RAM usage while playing an .mkv, if you're maxing either out, you need to upgrade or go for 720p .mkv's
