Subtitles/teletext

Postby Redhill » 12 Oct 2010 16:54

Following issue has surfaced when using VLC v1.1.4 with Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit and Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit (same problem was with v1.1.3 and XP):

When playing a DVB TS-file VLC correctly recognizes (you can see that from codec information) that there is teletext-based subtitle stream present. However, VLC appears to have difficulties in presenting that stream. In one case I have no subtitles at all, in an another case there were one subtitle shown every now and then (very rarely) and they were with varying languages (in this case there were 4 teletext-subtitle streams available, each different language).

Any ideas of how to fix this? I have tried with number of changes on the preferences, with no progress whatsoever.

Doesn't the teletext buttons pop-up?

Yes they do. However, nothing happens when you push them. Same with the "Video"-menu, when you click "Subtitle tracks" you can see the teletext-subtitles correctly announced there. But when you select them, nothing is visible.

When you play the same file with PVR (Topfield), the subtitles come out beautifully, so the text information apparently is stored in the file.

I'm experiencing similar issues with teletext subtitles when interlaced material is deinterlaced.
Can you check if it's the same for you by doing tests with deinterlacing ON and OFF ?

I have deinterlace off as default. Switching that on did not change anything (still no teletext visible).

Please could you upload on some file sharing site like Rapidshare or Megaupload a short sample of a file showing this issue ?

You should open a ticket on the bug tracker in which you will provide links to your samples.

Hello, I can confirm this also with Linux (vlc 1.1.0), so this should be platform independent problem. But 1.0.6 version was able to show teletext subtitles just fine, the language selection worked, all subs were shown, and the font was way much better. They moved the teletext handling to zvbi plugin, so I guess there is still some issues.
