Codec Details

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to determine the codec information of remote files and I have a question about the way VLC gets the Codec Details.

I have this file http://podcasts.cnn.net/cnn/big/podcast ... ay.cnn.m4v and to get codec information using Mediainfo I need to download about 80% (more than 150MB) of the file.

When I open the file in VLC it gets the codec information almost immediately.

Is there any specific way the VLC accesses the codec information ?
