PS3 back up Files an VLC

I know this is more a PS3 related issues but I am trying to tap all avenues....
I have bought a couple videos from PSN and I am trying to copy them. I understand Sony does only allows you to copy to other Sony devices (PSP, other PS3's etc.)
I can put it on a hard drive with the backup utility and I get two files:
20100702-064810-00000001.001 (this is the video file, evident by its size)
20100702-064810-00000001.BKP (Not sure what this is)

VLC tries to play this file and I get time data but no audio or video.

Any PS3 heavy people out there have any idea, or can point me in the right direction?
