Hey help a newbie out?

Hi I am new to VideoLan and my main problem is that I am totally unfamiliar with a lot of concepts and parameters.

For example I was trying to set up my webcam (it had a color problem now solved):

I figure directshow parameters such as video size and chroma format are clearly very important but which are the ones I can pick from? The tooltip only lists one or two and then puts those "..." which are very frustrating. Where is that information ? How am I supposed to know which are the parameters I can test?

As said this was just an example, can you please point me in the right direction so that I don't feel like a total noob? Where can I be educated on these or similar concepts?
