how to play an AVI file

i tried opening an AVI file using vlc in LINUX, but there is an error saying that input file couldnt be opened..

i dont know what libraries is required...
tell me what all codecs i need to installl

help out plz..

what linux distrib are you using ?
did you compile VLC yourself ?
