Understanding the VOB format... (what should I read?)

I'd like to learn more about the internal structure of VOBs. e.g. separating the video, audio, and subtitle streams. Can anyone suggest any reading that might help me get started? I have some ideas for VLC add-ons that I'd like to explore.

Also, is anyone aware of Java based APIs for working with VOBs?
