extracting a part of a videofile

Any idea on how to select a part in the middle of a videofile, and copy that part onto a memory stick ?
Background: I have several videofiles converted from old 8mm home movies. The files reside on 16 gb memory sticks.
Would like to copy some parts and give away to some friends, and copy other parts as gift to other friends. Have read thru VIDEOLAN documentation without finding any how-to-do. Can it be done using videolan?
