Thumbnails from a dir?

It would be extremely useful have the chance to generate thumbnails (as contact sheet) from a directory or from a playlist.

I know I would find it useful. I sometimes get video clips that Windows Media player or Media player classic or ImageGrabber II will not run. VLC will play some of these clips. I would be nice to be able to output a contact sheet when VLC will play the clip.

This would be little problematic for sources that don't allow random access. (like streaming video or webcam input)
