Converting isn't working in VLC

I have a .avi file, that is broken. When I open it with VLC, it asks me if I want to repair it, so I say yes. VLC starts playing it, so I close VLC and try to play it with Windows Media Player, and it doesn't work. VLC works, but that's not enough, I need to edit this. When I try converting it to a .mp4 or anything else, I am prompted to repair, so I say yes. When it's done, the output will play, but even in VLC it will have very low quality compared to the original file, and the audio is lower than usual. Does anyone know how to fix this?
