Nvidia Ion - what it can, and can't do!

So today I got my Asus Eee 1201N netbook. For $499 it certainly has the netbook price tag but to call this thing a netbook would be an understatement. It is a beast!

With 250GB of storage, and a maximum 8GB of ram, Nvidia ION Geforce 9400 chipset and a dual core (albeit) Atom processor, this thing runs Windows 7 like a charm! And makes videos look AMAZING with its 12" display.

I can play 1080p videos from Youtube without a hitch, but when I try to play 1080p MKV files (or even 720p MKV files) It stutters!

I understand MKV files are very compressed, but is there no way to make VLC work a little better with them? give it more resources? tell it to use the graphic chip instead of the CPU chip more? increase the buffer?

Any ideas would be appreciated, this guy has HDMI output and I really want to hook it up to my plasma and watch HD MKV movies!

VLC 1.1 might help you a lot on that.

Actually, I just installed MPC - Home Cinema (media player classic) and it plays ANY file like a champ!! totally smooth, no stuttering no interruptions (even while doing other things in the background).

So now I am certain the problem is with VNC and not with my laptop.. what gives?

VLC hasn't DXVA acceleration in current stable releases. As j-b said, it hopefully changes in 1.1.0

MPCHC has DXVA support build-in. So it can decode most MPEG-2, VC-1 and MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 videostreams with help of display adapter.

First of all, assuming you are using Windows 7, you don't need MPC-HC to get DXVA. Windows 7's build in h.264 decoder does DXVA just fine and works better than MPC-HC. All you need is the latest Haali's splitter to enable Windows Media Player 12 and Windows Media Center to be able to split the .mkv container and the Windows 7 decoder does the rest with DXVA. I use this method on my laptop that is an Intel GS45 GPU. On my Nvidia Ion machines I use CoreAVC 2.0 because it gives me better results via its CUDA support (the Nvidia alternative to DXVA). I also use AC3Filter on both machines to control my audio output. I use both of these solutions from within WMP12 and W7MC with perfect 1080p playback so I don't need to add any extra player to my machines and try to get the setting to work. Additionally, Windows Update takes care of all my updates. It is a simple and perfect solution. Don't burden yourself. Besides Windows 7 Media Center rocks.

OK, I found and installed AC3 filter and CoreAVC, now even regular windows media player plays the HD files great!

VLC cannot use CoreAVC, or AC3filter or any other external codec.

- Scroll mouse wheel to change window size (Like in BSPlayer)

I registered just to express my irritation with this post. I think, if VLC was a person, it would have lost its "romance" with this poster a long time ago.

The sheer arrogance of this poster is incredible: "Also don't forget to..."

If it read:

• "It's a shame this program can't do what I'm looking for at present" rather than "Hopefully you guys will make it right",

it would have been a start.

Then in the feature request section the poster could write:

• "please [a bit of courtesy for a program that's provided free] would you consider [courtesy, again] supporting these features in future releases".

Much better.


I personally prefer MPC-HC, but only because I haven't tried VLC in a while. (Being honest.) Both of these programs are supported by scores of dedicated people, who I am indebted to. They should be thanked, not "spat upon".
