want to use "video effects" for all video playback

want to use "video effects" for all video playback

Postby gobbles414 » 07 Oct 2009 07:11

I've searched Google, the documentation, the Wiki, and these forums for an answer to my question without success. Here is my question, with background information...

Version 1.02 of VLC on my Windows Vista computer plays neither video files nor DVDs with enough brightness, contrast, and saturation. To correct this, I have input custom values into TOOLS => PREFERENCES (advanced options visible) => VIDEO => FILTERS => IMAGE ADJUST. I am also using a custom value in the SHARPEN VIDEO sub-menu. VLC remembers these custom values from one session to the next, but I have to manually activate the values at the start of every session by going TOOLS => EFFECTS AND FILTERS => VIDEO EFFECTS => and putting one checkmark in "image adjust" and another in "sharpen" => CLOSE.

Is it possible to force VLC to automatically apply the custom video effects values at the beginning of each session? Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, in the preferences->advanced->filter, you can click to activate the needed filters.

Thank you for replying j-b... I assume that you mean Tools => Preferences (showing all settings) => Video => Filters? If yes, which checkboxes should I activate. And, if needed, what arguments should I use? Thanks again for your willingness to help!

Thank you j-b for your most recent reply. Although I really appreciate your help thus far, I think that you and I are miscommunicating.

I have already tried going Tools => Effects and Filters => Video Effects and checking "Image Adjust". Sadly, this setting is automatically turned off again whenever I exit VLC. As mentioned in my original question, I want my custom video effects to stay on at all times in VLC.

I do not see a checkbox called "Adjust" in either Tools => Preferences => Advanced or anywhere in the Tools => Preferences => Video => Filters menu. The closest I see to that is the sub-menu at Preferences => Video => Filters => Image adjust, but "Brightness Threshold" is the only checkbox in there and checking it does not help.

Please note, I am using VLC 1.0.2 in Windows Vista. Thanks again for your help and patience!

I don't understand, Tools => Effects and Filters => Video Effects and checking "Image Adjust" and quitting and coming back in vlc, works for me.

The checkmark always disappears from that checkbox whenever I exit and re-open VLC on my computer. Perhaps this behavior is being caused by a bug; I cannot find any such bug in the http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/search?q=&ticket=on database. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks!

Have you happened to figure out how to resolve this issue? I have tried everything that you have, and have also tried adding the appropriate switches to the command line when running VLC (such as vlc.exe --brightness=1.25 ...)...that correctly sets the brightness for me, but I am still having to go and check that damned box, heh.

Anyone able to toss some assistance this way? I am looking for the same thing that everyone else is...to have that box checked to enable those filters, and have it saved between sessions so I am not having to check it manually every time I start VLC.

This issue shows in 1.0.2 and 1.0.3, in both Windows XP, as well as Windows 7 Ultimate.

Hi folks,

I found the answer here: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=46202
Re: VLC and Video Parameters

Go to:
Settings >> Preferences... >> Video >> Filters

And tick "Image properties filter". Then go (still in Preferences):
Video >> Filters >> Image adjust

And enter you desired values for brightness, contrast etc. Press "Save" and restart VLC. Then try a video and it should automatically start with the specified adjustments.

Cheers, Arite.
John
