Installing and previous settings

I just installed 1.0.2 to replace 1.0.1 and, as usual, I did not delete my previous settings. But I'm always confused during a VLC install about the relationship between the file association options being shown for approval and my previous settings. Do the new ones ignorne the old, override the old or what? This time I noticed the Delete Prefs & Cache option box and unchecked it, hoping that maybe that would keep the old. Would someone please explain the process. thanks.
