what mode for VLC?

Hello,
Im a new linux user, and Ive converted my living room pc to Ubuntu.
Ive noticed with ubuntu 9.04, the full screen play was completely buggy when I was turning on desktop visual effects.
is there a way to resolve this?
Also Id like to know what mode is the best to play 1080p content, opengl, x11 ... ?
my gfx card is an ATI radeon HD 3650

The full screen code for X11 has been rewritten for VLC 1.1. That should fix your issue.
