Changing skin

Postby 3breadt » 18 Aug 2009 10:53

If you have any problems setting up VLC to use a specific skin, please first check the

Skins page in the VideoLAN wiki.

It contains a detailed step-by-step tutorial on how to change VLC's skin and answers frequently asked questions about skin problems.

If you still have any problems with chaning VLC's skin, please post them in this topic.

An official list of skins can be found at: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/skins.php
Some more can be found at http://www.deviantart.com/?catpath=cust ... a/vlcmedia
But be cautios regarding the latter page, some skins don't work properly, some are not actual skins but modifications for the Mac OS X version of VLC.

1. You need to go to interface ---> preferences. In new window select "Use custom skin" in interface section, select browse button and choose your skin (you usually should, but not in 1.1.4, i'll tell you why for a second). If you using older version of player skip step 2.
2. If you use 1.1.4 version, you should go to preferences too, but not clicking browse, just copy the skin full directory address from windows explorer plus skin full name in additional. (for example: C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\skins\avs_0_95_beta.vlt) and paste it to the text box (replace previous text).
3. click save & restart vlc media player. Now you can use skins from selected directory by right click in vlc window ---> interface ---> select skin

Now about that thing with text box. I don't know why, but for some reason (in VLC v. 1.1.4) when you click browse in preferences in new window will be called "select file" but it has save button. Weird bug :p
Here is proof on my win xp.

Hello!
bug appeared in vlc with skin system... Skin change on "use costum skin", we select for example darklounge_vlc_1.0.vlt
I push the button "show file inf", then I close clicking on a dagger (on the button to close all normally)... Mouse gestures as though is not present disappear, only keypad commands work.
When you come into the setting (adjustments) all too most.
P.S. system Win7 Pro (64). Sorry my bad english.

Hi,

for a very long time Ive been having this problem with changing skins: no matter what skin I choose, I just want to apply it via the interface settings (as described pretty much everywhere - here on the forums, in the wiki, on the skin page etc.), but after setting the skin I am never able to start VLC again. I have to completely reinstall it in order for it to work again.

This has been an issue for me for many versions and I was hoping that version 2 would finally fix it. Unfortunately it didnt, so maybe I am just doing something wrong - its just that I cannot figure out what could be done wrong on clicking a radiobutton in preferences and browsing to the skin file. :) The skin file is saved in VLC skins folder. My operating system is Windows 7 Professional, should it be of any significance.

Any thoughts that could help, please? Not that the default skin wasnt sufficient, its just extremely boring and completely uninteresting.:)

Executing the command "vlc -I qt4" should start VLC with its default interface. Then you can access the settings and disable skins. Although I believe having deleted ~/.vlc should have already disabled the skins mode and reactivated the normal interface.

Skins of any media player do not work on Mac OS X!
Put the downloaded VLT files in the following folder:

On Windows: the skins folder in the VLC installation directory (e.g. C:\Program Files\VLC\skins)
On Linux/Unix: ~/.local/share/vlc/skins2

Then open your VLC settings and change your interface from native to skins. You can choose your desired skin already there or change it when you are in the skins mode by right clicking somewhere on the skin and going to Interface>Choose Skin.

VLC needs to be restarted to change to skins mode.

I loaded the whole package but the skin I want isn't there by name ^^

edit: ok, it wasn't in the package although its the best voted

I have a quick skin question. If you want to make your own skin for the VLC. Is the VLC skin editor the only tool you need besides your skin. I guess Im looking for a like a style guide that gives you file formats, size dimensions and things like that. I'm still searching around but I figured I'd post while I snoop and if the answer comes faster this way, great!!!

Can anyone suggest the most basic skin for a first time edit.
I would like to teach someone with limited skills how to do simple edits in a premade working skin. It would be nice if the skin has detailed notes and limited features just for getting the base functions down.
Also a youtube link would be helpful.
Thank you.

Changing a skin in VLC seems to be not known by many VLC users. There are some good skins.
I write how to tutorials in my website HowToDoNinja.com . Read VLC tutorials in my website.
