I was unable to play mkv files on my RealPlayer...and someone told me to download VLC Media Player because it plays all file extensios, including,mkv files...but I wasn't sucessful, unless I did something wrong? Am I supposed to add a codec and if so, how? Confused?
Any thoughts or ideas...would be appreciated........................Thank you, JC

No, VLC should play MKV by default, without any configuration.
